Flag Over Mount Rushmore
By John Shaw
John Shaw has masterfully captured the most powerful subjects of his career. Mount Rushmore, our nation’s “Shrine of Democracy,” embellished by the American Flag — the most faithful symbol of our nation’s being.
The skillful hand of John Shaw draws us into the pine-clad Black Hills of South Dakota where in 1927 sculptor Gutzon Borglum began to create what has been called the eighth wonder of the world, Mount Rushmore. With granite as his medium, Borglum sculpted a sixty-foot tall portrait of four men who guided our country to greatness.
The four men — George Washington — Thomas Jefferson — Theodore Roosevelt — and Abraham Lincoln — Presidents each having blessed us with their wisdom, filled us with their convictions and passed to us their own great expectations of our nation’s future. Borglum could never have foreseen any of the dramatic events which would occur during the first fifty years of Mount Rushmore’s existence, each giving our “Monument to Freedom and Democracy” deeper meaning.
Today Mount Rushmore stands more powerful than the dynamite used in its creation, awaiting the next fifty years. John Shaw applied both his talent and ingenuity in uniting Mount Rushmore National Memorial and the American Flag, creating what is dubbed “A Portrait of America.”
The vision of John Shaw’s great tribute to our nation will surely fill every American heart with pride — and any other with envy.

The 1991 Mount Rushmore First Day Issue stamp
The 1991 Mount Rushmore First Day Issue stamp (29-cent Flag over Mt. Rushmore) marks the 50th anniversary of the completion of the National Memorial (1941–1991) and signifies a surge in patriotism following the Persian Gulf War. Issued on March 29, 1991, in Keystone, South Dakota, it was part of a definitive series showcasing national landmarks.
Key Significance of the 1991 Stamp:
50th Anniversary: The stamp honors the 1941 completion of the carving, celebrating the golden anniversary of the monument.
Patriotic Symbolism: Released to satisfy a high demand for new flag stamps following the Persian Gulf War, the design blends the American flag with a major national landmark.
Philatelic Distinctions:
First Day of Issue: The stamp was cancelled on its first day of release, March 29, 1991, at Mt. Rushmore, SD, making it highly collectible.
Production Methods: The March 29, 1991 issue was printed by the Bureau of Engraving and Printing (BEP) using the intaglio process. A later version (July 4, 1991) was the first US coil stamp not printed by the BEP, produced instead by the American Bank Note Company.
Designed by Clarence Holbert, the stamp features a 29-cent rate.
The cancellation on the first day of issue, particularly on a "First Day Cover" (FDC), represents a snapshot of American history in 1991, combining postal history with the 50th anniversary of the monument.

In America, patriotic art serves as a powerful “visual heartbeat” — preserving the nation’s history, promoting unity, and reflecting its evolving values. Far more than decoration, these works act as historical records and emotional anchors for national identity.
The Core Role of Patriotic Art
Preserving History
Iconic works such as Washington Crossing the Delaware by Emanuel Leutze provide lasting visual references to pivotal moments like the American Revolution, often enhancing emotional impact through artistic interpretation.
Promoting Unity and Values
Patriotic art frequently centers on enduring symbols like the American flag and the bald eagle — reminding citizens of shared ideals such as liberty, justice, and freedom.
Rallying National Spirit
During challenging times, including World War II, artists like Norman Rockwell created works such as Four Freedoms to inspire unity and reinforce the core principles of the nation.
Shaping National Identity
Modern patriotic art embraces diverse perspectives. Artists like Amy Sherald highlight broader narratives of American identity, ensuring the nation’s story remains a vibrant tapestry of all its citizens.
Iconic Artists in American Patriotic Art
Gilbert Stuart – His Lansdowne Portrait of George Washington remains one of the most recognized images in American history.
John Trumbull – Creator of Declaration of Independence, displayed in the U.S. Capitol Rotunda.
Childe Hassam – Known for his American flag series during World War I, symbolizing unity and resilience.
Peter Max – A contemporary artist celebrating American creativity and freedom through bold pop art style.
Patriotic Art Beyond Museums
Patriotic art is woven into everyday American life:
Currency & Stamps – National leaders and symbols reinforce historical continuity.
Community Engagement – Programs like the Veterans of Foreign Wars Young American Creative Patriotic Art Contest inspire thousands of students annually.
Public Installations – Murals and monuments strengthen community bonds and encourage dialogue on national values.
